AUGUST, SUNDAY, 2. 1874 Intended to rise early. Mamma called me. All night. I would count five and then spring out of bed. Good intentions not acted upon. To half past ten o'clock mass with Mazie and Mary. Better sermon than usual by Father Fausey. Ernest Melliss called in the morning. Nice looking and interesting in his conversation. Curious whiskers. Dr. O'Gorman and Barney Williams at dinner. In the evening all the married folks away to Williams. Mamma home. Geil. Bourke and Capt. Costello came in evening. Also Myles O'Brien and wife Fallot business man of San Francisco Fitzpatrick corset man and Mupel Young Englishman. Dancing. I took part as lady. Not successful. Nice evening but foolish look and boyish conduct. O'Brien and Costello joking about married life. Bourke and myself intended to sleep in a tent at Young's park. Left house about twelve. All dark at the park. Went to the restaurant. Saw a man. Asked him some questions. Unsatisfactory replies. Slept in the Hotel. Only a sheet. Very cold. Dada here. Looking well. Meliss stayed all night. Wrote letters to Brashen and Lawarche.

MONDAY, 3. Bourke a fearful snorer. Difficulty in falling asleep. Woke up early feeling cold. Dressed. Bourke awakened by breakfast bell. Ardens whiskey for himself, I take ginger ale but cannot drink it. Breakfast at hotel. Game of billiards. To our house. In the morning a major Hunt calls upon us. Small gentleman. Queen walk. Profound bow. Talks affectedly. Moustache. Neat in appearance. I do not like him. Bourke and Costello to dinner. Very pleasant after dinner talk. B. and C. told of their arrest for swindling. Mistaken identity. Young gentleman friend of Mazie calls in afternoon. Dressed neatly. Not handsome. Pleasant manners and agreeable conversationist. With Bourke and Costello all afternoon. Very unpleasant time. Elliot pays me a visit. Been to Long Branch. Play billiards. Bourke left at eight or nine. Saw Hunt again. I think both he and Costello not as refined or fine gentlemen as they might be. Bourke better than either of them. More of the neat gentleman.

TUESDAY, 4. Mr. Templeman, Mazie's friend and Elliot still here. With Elliot most of the day. Mary Mazie and Mary Bevius went with Mr. Templeman to Greenwood. Elliot and I went in bathing. Water very pleasant. Received a letter from Victor Halderman. Played billiards with Mr. Brown.

WEDNESDAY, 5. Commenced an answer to Victor Halderman's letter. Elliot left to day. Templeman and he went to New York together. Templeman returned in the evening. Papa came home about eight. Had been to the clan na gael picnic. He brought Kent down with him. he wants me to wad a hundred pafes a day. Gen Bourke and a Mr. O'Neil a quiet good natured young man came home about half past four. I went swimming with them. Walked as far as the Bath Hotel after supper. Met Templeman on the way. He walked up with me. The Hotel looked deserted. Mary Mazie mamma and papa spent the evening at mass. Kerstins.
