Very cold. Wind on a high horse. Cutting up the devil's own capers. I have to make great preparations before retiring. I [[waner]] my night shirt, my bed clothes [[nupelf]] and then bolt for bed and shiver out the night. Two wood fires going upstairs: one to be superseded by coal.

Bought N.4 Sun + Gazette. An article from my pen was published in Sun. Nothing in Gazette. Papa Will + myself continue living comfortably enough. Papa's cold continues. He takes medicine with little effect.

Dec. Thursday 7th 1876 Study very little of Phonograph + little of Blackstone. Read quite a deal of the early dramatists. Find their comedies full of wit mixed with much filthiness. The beach covered with ice and the sea away out. The poles of fisherman covered with ice. Everything fiercely cold and cheerless. Friday 8th Very cold. Wind on a high horse.
