I found my way downstairs at about ten as I thought but at 12 as it turned out. Had breakfast and dinner at [[Eugemaris]] in Washer. St. Bk. Saw Papa at his office. To the Herald. Did nothing. To Bath on 7.10 Dummy. Spent quiet evening. Talked to Mary Harrison. |

Dec. Thursday 7th 1876 Study very little of Phonograph + little of Blackstone. Read quite a deal of the early dramatists. Find their comedies full of wit mixed with much filthiness. The beach covered with ice and the sea away out. The poles of fisherman covered with ice. Everything fiercely cold and cheerless.
Friday 8th Very cold. Wind on a high horse. Cutting up the devil's own capers. I have to make great preparations before retiring. I waner my night shirt, my bed clothes nupelf and then bolt for bed and shiver out the night. Two wood fires going upstairs: one to be superseded by coal.
Saturday 9th Bought N.4 Sun + Gazette. An article from my pen was published in Sun. Nothing in Gazette. Papa Will + myself continue living comfortably enough. Papa's cold continues. He takes medicine with little effect.
Sunday 10th My usual day for donning white shirt. Willie and I out to see newsboy. Cold, very cold, and I and the youngster were nearly frozen. Spent an inactive day. Believe I read and wrote. Papa busy on his book.
Monday 11th First decent snow. Papa to the city. He did not want to go. No more ball playing. To Wrights. Bought paper. Composing article for Sun. Willie out, wrapped up. Papa home in the evening. I read + wrote.
Tuesday 12th Continuation of snow flakes. Heard from Belle and Aunt Jin about this time. Papa did not go to the city. Haven't smoked yet, wrote quite a deal for Papa, do not read much of Blackstone or Phonography now.
Wednesday 13th I am going to the Harold + Mr. Fraynor to try to get situation. Papa saw both the other day. Reading and writing all day. Papa to the city. Yesterday I wrote to Mary, George, Mazie, and J.V.L Snow on the ground.
Thursday 14th Wrote answer to Belle's letter. Did not post it. Cold weather. We are going to have a severe winter. The snow lasts. The beach covered with it. To Wright's as usual. Saw the same lot of looneys.
Friday 15th Saw Mr. Fraynor; tried to see Connery. To BK. with Papa. Saw Belle Sullivan. Not heated as well as last visit. Belle + Pauline ... evening party. Come home 6 Dummy. Saw Louise Waters. Writing till late for Papa.
Saturday 16th Saw Connery. This nervous and sickly looking. Spoke kindly to me. Introduced me to Aty Editor. Mr. Chamber who sent me on a task knew nothing about. Failed feet dreadfully lonely. Dreadfully cold .... Met Bazard who a ....
Sunday 17th Home all day. My first effort appeared in to day's Herald. Looks better than I had dared hoped. Cold day. Fixed up my things. Loafing around. Writing all day and all night for Papa. To bed after 12.
Monday 18th Great snow storm which became rain storm; consequence much slush. Around with Bayard. He took me to Press Club. We had nice dinner at Astor House. In the evening to Chris O'Connor's and then to report Concert at Steinway Hall. Interviewed artists behind the scenes. Spent the night with Bayard at his house. To bed about 2 or 3. First night away from home in a year. Felt lonesome.
Tuesday 19th Did nothing all day long. Up late. Come home in evening by way [Ft.]] Hamilton. Walked around through snow with cold wind blowing. Brought Willie a book. Suffered from cold. Found everyone mourning my absence. Poor Papa burst out crying o crying "oh Johnnie pet. I have been so lonely without you." To bed 11 1/2.
Wednesday 20th Spent the night the 20th with Bayard. We slept in narrow bed. To Herald office late. Called at Bayard's. We went over together. Saw some wonderful lillie and playing with Dions, Daly, and Izar. Reported it: but did not got printed. Assigned to night work. Busy till 1 1/2 Running through slush for over 4 hours.
Thursday 21st Up after 10. To Papa's office. To Mrs. O' Brienis. Was cordially received by Mrs. O.B. Mary Rob staying there; she was out. To Mrs. Kelly's. Found them at the funeral. The girl was not allowing me in. Saw Aunt Caffrey, husband, Mrs. Beines + children Mrs. Kelly + others. Reported death. On night work till 2.
Friday 22nd Up 10 1/2. Bkfast with Bayard. Saw Mary Miss Juedteberg and Papa at 44 Court. To Herald. Sent by Connery to interview horse car superintendents. Rode walked and talked. Snow all day. My feet were ringing wet. Through at 8 1/2. Finished article 10.50. Spent night at Badgers. Bed about 2.
