Today like many other days + went without my breakfast. Did not have anything to eat the whole day worth speaking about. Saw Papa at his office. He had been to Newark and brought Billie with him. The poor Billie fellow! His life is once more darkened. Saw William Robertson of the Bowery, Papa's cousin. He is looking poorly. He has failed in business and looks shabby. About this time borrowed a little money from Preston. It comes in handy. I will owe two weeks board tomorrow and nothing to <s>show for</s> pay for it with. Wrote to [Magie Sawarehe?] and posted letter to Brasher hereabout. That is I posted all three today or about it. Stayed in the office again: same poor result.  Saw Mary I think.  She is suffering from a bad cold.

September April

[Centered] Monday, 30.

[Right] 1877

To New York after 12. Ellen got my breakfast and a lunch. Hurried to New York. To the Court just in time to hear the cases. Two or three items which I wrote up and tried to make interesting. Only one was kept and that was reduced half. Smoked a good deal today then made up my mind not to smoke until Sunday. To boarding house quite late. Did not see Mary. Stayed around the office: first time in some days hoping to get some-thing to do; my waiting did me no good. I was glaring given nothing.
