September April
[Centered] Monday, 30.
[Right] 1877
To New York after 12. Ellen got my breakfast and a lunch. Hurried to New York. To the Court just in time to hear the cases. Two or three items which I wrote up and tried to make interesting. Only one was kept and that was reduced half. Smoked a good deal today then made up my mind not to smoke until Sunday. To boarding house quite late. Did not see Mary. Stayed around the office: first time in some days hoping to get some-thing to do; my waiting did me no good. I was glaring given nothing.

Today like many other days + went without my breakfast. Did not have anything to eat the whole day worth speaking about. Saw Papa at his office. He had been to Newark and brought Billie with him. The poor Billie fellow! His life is once more darkened. Saw William Robertson of the Bowery, Papa's cousin. He is looking poorly. He has failed in business and looks shabby. About this time borrowed a little money from Preston. It comes in handy. I will owe two weeks board tomorrow and nothing to show for pay for it with. Wrote to [Magie Sawarehe?] and posted letter to Brasher hereabout. That is I posted all three today or about it. Stayed in the office again: same poor result. Saw Mary I think. She is suffering from a bad cold.

Did not get up till late. Saw Did not see Mary. She is quite bad. Had my breakfast. Read a trifle of Blackstone my old friend. Nothing of any account at Court. Stayed at office again. Have begun another [lay?] letter to Aunt Jim. Papa did not come in today. To boarding house.
[Centered] Thursday 3rd
Late again in rising. [Fan?] better [haves?] however than at [Badgum?]. I never [level?] damn late here like there but am almost always up at 8. Recd [live?] letters one from Marie and one from Aunt Jim. Both are well and write interesting kind letters. At office till late: no food result. My bill this week I have made out $12.70 a better one than I have had in weeks before.
[Centered] Friday 4th
Breakfasted yesterday an not today at boarding house. No breakfast to speak of today. Saw Papa. Borrowed $1 yesterday from young Nesbit [son?] of a lawyer in 51st Street + paid it today. My bill amts to $12.70. They did not [eat?] it much to my surprise. Foolishly spending it. Always short towards end of week. Saw Mary. She is unwell. I went to [Wallacks?]. Saw Loud my awful Dad. Enjoyed it greatly. To house after 12. Mary had gone to Newark left note for me + Papa.
