May Sunday 27th 1877 Near being late for court. Breakfast led in New York. No court news to write Herald of free their Bath. Mom and Papa at Mrs. Williams to dinner. I had some tea, dry bread, and not nice meat. While eating dorm came Pauline Sullivan. Where is my excitement now. In the clouds! She and I dallied around. In a short while dorm came Marie. Alliance insisted by Mrs. Williams, Florence, and wife. All looking well. Mary off with the three named dining. Leaving Pauline behind at the entrance by me. In the evening, Mom, Papa, Pauline, and self had supper at Mrs. Williams. We passed pleasant time. In a short time to bed, a short time was two hours. Mom settled down. Ellen and me marched off. Mr. Duddles came in to see Papa. Walked to come down, did so. Ellen returns. Mr. Duddles sets back. The old lady looking well and heartly. Walking later with Pauline everywhere and around everything. Nice day though, a trifle cool. Papa a little better. Monday 28th Nice day. Pauline, Mary, and Papa in city. Rode a little while to the city on 12 5 7 dummy. Pleasant day. Passed Emma Batterson: She coming to Bath. Nothing at court. Waited in Herald office till late. Was invited to theatre; came out. Tuesday 29th Up late. Had my breakfast and dinner together in Eugenes. To Papa's office. Saw some ladies there that were talking about taking the house. Papa and I quarreled. Wrote up number of court cases. The people only used one. On unified duty, saw in my pocket. To bed about 4. Very nice weather. Wednesday 30th Warm day. Breakfast at Eugenes. Lower in pocket. I went to concentrate. There was nothing there luckily. Back to the Herald office. Waiting from 2 to 6 for a job; no job however. I had five cents in my pocket this evening so to Newark friend lending me ticket. While crossing West St., a passing vehicle filled my clothes, face, and clean shirt with mud. Found all well at Newark. Spent a quiet evening. Uncle away great part of the evening. George and I played brilliance. The children and I stomped about and I lost my shield. Smoked a great deal. Went to bed around 12. Changed my splattered shirt when I reached Newark. The folks waiting for me had not sat down, yet to appear. Thursday 31st Unused to Newark early rising. Late, though not late for breakfast. About 12 Mary arrived. Aunt Sue gave me fifty-cents. Badly needed it. Nice weather, very warm. Nothing at court. Had an all day tight collar t-shirt. Great discomfort. Stayed in Herald office until 10 1/2. Continued letter to Aunt Sue. To Harris! Music nearby. Heard it at a festival. June Friday 1st Up late. Hurried from Harris', looking as dirty as could be. My luck! Met Miss Thorne on Clinton St. First time had seen her in 2 years. She is now quite tall. I think she saw me. Hope so. To office. Buffet for breakfast. Read for this week $13.20. Started to be economical before first day was over. Home been dammed extravagant. Payed a lawyer $1.50 I owed him. Treated a lad named Henry Trice to meals and liquor. Spent some money in school. To Brottis Theatre. Saw Rinfold in Henry V. Warm in the place. Payed $1 for a seat. I liked the performance less than I expected. Rinfold manly looking and doing quite a number of things cleverly. Back to Herald office. Spent some time there. Then back to Sandy Spencers with Fitzpatrick and Henry. Stayed there till 4:20 bed at Harris 5 o'clock in the morning and broad daylight. Saturday 2nd Up earlier than I anticipated I would be. Very warm weather. To Papa's office. First time since we quarrled. He was not there. Brushed my clothes. Mailed letters to Maize, Mary, Harrison, and Aunt Sue. Read letter from JUL Wassut one time ago. Papa had opened it by mistake. To court. One item which wrote up. Mailed to Theatre and failed to thank me once before. We had supper together and then saw Smike at Union Square. Some parts good, some bad. Saw Katie Richards afterwards on street. Devilish woman in theatre. House about 1 o'clock.
