Oct. Wednesday 18th. 1876 Played ball. Warmer weather. Sundry disputes with Aunt Mary. Papa did not appear today. Yesterday wrote to Pauline, excusing myself for not calling; also to the Rural Gazette and (?) (?) (?). house very lonely now. No one but Aunt Mary Willis (?) and the servants left. Read. Posted two (?) papers to V.M. Halderman.
Thursday 19th Played ball for a few minutes. Mailed paper to Aunt (?). Spent the evening in a long and unsatisfaction, like with Aunt Mary. She was at the school examination today, and failed again.
Friday 20th To Bklyn. Saw Papa. Wrote to Mary, Rob. Read letter from G. O'Sullivan. Dada has had his eyes operated on. Reading the papers and feeling unwell. Have not (?) since the 15th.
Saturday 21st Our club was to have played the Nameless, but rain prevented. Spent most of a very dull day at Wright's. Sidelined to village (?). Read till late at night. Not cold but damp weather so I kept a (?) fire going. I have (?) been going into (?) killing "his".
Sunday 22 Disagreeable day. Papa here in the evening. He has not received the nomination for Congress. It is a shame the way he is treated. We expected Kelly or someone to come down, but we were visited by no one for the first Sunday, in a good while. Rained all day. Heard from Mam, Rob tomorrow. Sat up reading Bleak House. Find it as interesting as when I first read it.
Monday 23 Papa left early. I sat up earlier than normal. I nowadays (?) in bed til after 10. Hope to do better. I am reading Bleak House; very interesting. Mailed letters to (?) and (?) Wendy. Writing (?) letter to (?) him. To bed (?).
Tuesday 24 Today or yesterday was a splendid day. Aunt Mary left, to be gone all night. To (?). I received two letters one from Mary, (?) a letter from Brasher to her, and one from Dan. Kelly (?) is (?) sent an envelope and a picture of my college inside. To Wright's played ball a little while.
Wednesday 25 Played baseball a little while, gave several of my fingers a (?), and came near being badly hurt. A pleasant day, though not so nice as yesterday. Received letter from Aunt (?). Aunt Mary home after supper. Stumbled across Mrs. Williams and Marie looking very (?) and rough. Sent off letters to Dan, Kelly - such (?) - N.Y. Sum and J.B. Brasher. The one to the (?) will not be published as usual. Papa was to have been down today but is not. He has given up hopes of having any political office at present. He feels badly. Carnival (?) to bef about one o'clock. Yesterday (?) letter is Aunt (?). Its theme is the little (?) Nellie and (?).
Thursday 26th
My birthday. Received kind note from Marie. Dear Papa came from the city on the last (?) to be with me a little while on my (?) day. He brought me a letter from (?). I believe I played ball for a little while. Moonlight on the bay.
Friday 27th Wrote a communication for Bklyn (?). It will not be published. Papa came home feeling quite unwell and unhappy. I feel real (?) that I am so (?) a fellow.
Saturday 28th Were to have played Nameless but they (?) and (?). I visited Wallacks. Saw Forbidden Fruit. Enjoyed it very much. Saw Miss Rebecca Morehead. Enjoyed that too very much but she was in dress circle and I in (?). Home about 7. Papa still ill but better I think.
Sunday 29 Papa left in afternoon to introduce a lecturer. I wrote three long letters to (?).(?).(?). Mary Rob and (?). Pleasant day but no one came to see us. I do nothing nowadays but talk eat sleep and write. I read a little of a kind more interesting than useful.
Monday 30th Mailed letters to (?), Mary, and George. Pleasant day. Played ball. Came near being hurt. Papa home. He is still feeling unwell. Thinking all day of setting something to do. Aunt Mary and myself expecting letters none came. A beautiful night.
Tuesday 31 Played ball. Coming home in the evening and found Mary Rob here. I was right glad to see her. She is looking well. She had not read my last letter. I spent the evening telling her all the news and she told me all the news she had. We passed a quiet but pleasant time.
