January Sunday 14th Heard that Papa and Mary had been here Friday night and had spent it in Badger’s. Today they go to Newark. To the office. In the afternoon sent to an Isrealitish meeting; it was private so I saw the secretary in the evening, and he gave me the information I desired . Monday 15th To Brasher’s. Read the newspapers and then we went to the office. Did nothing all day in the evening to report a stags ball at Tammany Hall. Home with Bayard. Received letter from George O’Sommau. Home earlier than usual. To bed but unable to get asleep for some time. Tuesday 16th Wrote to Mary on Monday. Recd. postal card from Mary and letters from R.H. Sullivan and J.U.L. Played billiards with Fitzpatrick and Bayard Brasher. I lost all the games. In the evening reported Gene Dahlgren’s lecture for the Herald. Saw Papa today for the first time in a good while. Home early. When I go to bed I find it hard to get to sleep as I am not accustomed to early bed. Wrote letters to Mazie and Rural Gazette at Brasher’s house. With Bayard to the Herald office. Up late this morning about 10 which is however a great improvement on other days performances. Wednesday 17th Up about 10. To Herald with Bayard whom I called for at his house. Got nothing to do till late when I was sent to interview a victim of a forgery. The first time I called he was out the second time he had returned home but in an injured condition. Home after 12 but did not get to sleep till later. Thursday 18th Recd. postal card from Mary. Sent out to interview different persons on the depositing of snow and mud into slips tc. Spent the afternoon at the work. Wrote quite a good deal on the subject. At night I played at looking up the files of the London Times. Saw him there. Recd. new post. To Hooley’s with Johnnie Howest. I did not enjoy it much. To Bath with him. Brought with us 100 oysters and a quantity of crackers. We had a feast. We sat up till after 4 ½ in the morning. I wrote and played cards. We walked from 3rd Ave along 86th St. home. It was a disagreeable lineup. Wrote to R.H. Sullivan, to Belle Sullivan and to George. I also sent a copy of Sunday Eagle to Aunt June. Papa is to leave Bath soon. Saturday 20th Up late. In the afternoon my father came down. He and I had little if anything to say to each other.
