February Friday 2nd Bayard’s and my story appears today. Two columns long. Big till this week 27.70. I am coming up in the world. Last week was a hard week plenty of work. Rainy day. Think I was engaged at something but perhaps not. To see Clara Morris in Miss Multon. Neat crowd. I got a poor seat in the gallery but enjoyed the play exceedingly. Morris is a great actor. Walked from the theatre to Badgers. To bed by 1 ½. Saturday 3rd To Herald office. Sent with Fitzpatrick to interview bankers on corrupt Mr. Kelly’s statement. Sent a letter to Belle Sullivan today or yesterday. Loafed in the office doing nothing. I paid Fitzpatrick yesterday $2.96 and Bayard $4.19. Visited Mary Rob at Mrs. O’Brien’s. Walked with her to Union Square theatre. She went to see Clara Morris in Miss Multon. Recd. a letter from Aunt Mary asking me to meet her last night. I wrote to her. Sunday 4th To Papa’s office then to the Herald. Sent to “City Missions.” Found Bayard there. Detailed to report murder of a wife by a husband. Collected facts and then had to think over the matter to a Mr. Roche. In the evening around at the East side stations. Got through about one or half past one o’clock. Took supper with Bayard. Eat heartily. Tomorrow I go to buy a new hat + intend to replace the old I have now worn for a year and which is very lowly. Monday 5th Mary Rob spent last night here. She came into my room and we had a very long talk. She is going to board at Badger’s also Papa. Mary was down to see Papa at Bath yesterday. She found some broken up housekeeping on Friday ever since in Newark. Mary Harrison has left for good. I am sorry. To Mrs. Burns Mary H’s aunt to see her niece. Did not see Mary H. She was visiting. Spent some time there, took dinner. Met Johnnie who had brought the girls back from Bath. Wrote an article on “Factions in a Class.” To Badgers early. Spent evening with Mary + Papa. Tuesday 6th Mary Rob came in and talked to me. Change in the city editorship. Chambers retires and Meighan takes his place. Fitzpatrick in the latter’s shoes. Sent to see about wreck of “Geo. Washington.” Met J.L. Carmana and Luke Mulany in the street. The former pretended to be pleased the latter was indifferent. Rewrote an article on “Freight Rates.” On night duty and to the different police stations downtown. To Badgers about 3. Wednesday 7th Mary Rob came into my room in the morning. We had quite a chat. To Papa’s office. Had very little to do at the Herald office till the evening. With Fitzpatrick to an eating house where girls wait on the table and everything is clean. My money small. In the evening to a temperance meeting in Pike St. To Badgers about 10 ½. Spent the evening with Mary Rob. About 11 ½ Papa hunting around for something to eat. He felt sick. Thursday 8th Late breakfast about 11. To Papa’s office then to Herald office. Loafed all day. At night sent to Union League meeting. Before going to Badgers, had supper for the 1st time. Mary had not returned from Newark. To Papa’s office, then to Union League Club. Wrote a short account. Saw Brasher and Charles Harvey. Fitzpatrick ugly indisposition as usual. To Badger’s amused things, to bed after 2 o’clock. Letters from Mary Harrison + J.U. Lausing. Wrote postal cards to Belle Sullivan and Mary Harrison. Friday 9th Up about 10 ½. Spent the morning + until 1 with Aunt Mary and Mary Rob. Had not seen the former since she left Bath. Talked with Papa. He spent last night at Bath. Called at Frankling Ave. house and saw Mary Harrison. She was pleased to see me. To New York to the office recd. 27.15 for last week’s work. Uptown and bought tickets for Our Boarding House for Mary Hamilton. To Franklin Ave. to Bath by way of Fort Hamilton. Place looks dreary. Saturday 10th Yesterday recd. letters from Uncle William. Got up quite late about eleven or twelve o’clock. Johnnie Hornet brought in my breakfast while I was in bed. Susie down during the day. Spent the afternoon reading and fixing up things in my rooms. In the evening John and I to Furnell’s where we stayed playing billiards and cards till after twelve. I spent a few dollars. The place looks very dreary and desolate. Mary Harrison gave life to the house. Sunday 11th Up late. To Brooklyn in the afternoon after long wait at the dummy station. To Herald. They wanted to know where I had been. On night duty. To Badgers in the wee small hours. All quiet on the Potomac.
