March Thursday 1 1877 In the evening sent to report a Woman's Rights meeting. I went to a wrong number first. Arrived at the right place I listened to females reading marching speeches to something I had not been used to learning. There were no pretty women - yes only one - present - and such men! I stayed there till quite late. Bought tickets for Friday + Saturday to see Lotta at the Brooklyn Academy. Got good seats for Mary and self. Indications of full houses each night. Came home late to Badgers. Found a letter from Mary. To be at my usual late hour. Think it was a [disareptuable] day.
Friday 2nd
To Court and to Herald office. Hurried over to Brooklyn avoiding wine as I wished to go to the theatre. Reported two or three things from the court. A rainy day and night. Invested in a $150 umbrella about this time I think this morning or afternoon. Last week I believe I visited Newark probably the week before, the first time in over a year. Received a long letter from Aunt Jane about this time and answered it. With Mary to see Lotta. Crowded house. The play, [Muselte]. Mary and I both heartily enjoyed ourselves. Lotta was in her usual good spirits. The play is interesting. Back to Badgers. We sat up [talking] about the play till quite late. Papa home. For a wonder he made very little if any objection to our going.
Saturday 3
Up about 11 or 12. Mary to New York I think. Wrote three or four police items about the Court. Left the office right away. To Brooklyn. Mary with a headache and was afraid she would not enjoy the play. We went and she soon forgot about the headache. Crowded house again. Lotta in great spirits. The play [Zip] in which I have now seen her three times. The little favorite called before the curtain two or three times. Saw Emma Joe Tobey + her papa at the piece. Also a queer little body a young lady with an [over bright fancy]] little face. Papa to Newark. He did not know we were to go to the theatre to night. Last week I received over $20 salary or wages.
Sunday 4th
Was to have gone to Bath on Saturday - had a [trouper] attraction however. I wrote to Miss Rebecca V. Moorhead not loupago. I do not know how my communication will be received. Reached Court late as usual. I have not been at court a single morning since my appointment + I am supposed to be there every morning. Hayes President. The New York [] has lowered its flag, union Jack down. Same Police Court Hours. All night prowling around [] Square to see if Hayes was to be burnt in effigy. No effigy. To Herald Police Headquarters. Listened to a number of yams. To the office. About are or after sent to Tilden's house. Reresed this servant seat up note returned unopened.
Monday 5th
Last night had quite a controversy with a cab driver. I gave him $150 to take me to [...] Park. Of course I meant there + back. He told me I had paid to go there not to come back. He got the $150 and I rode down in a car. Only one dollar and a half left andof my week's earnings. I spend as fast as I make. Wrote up some articles from the Court. Helped Bagard to write an article. He has been to Square Beach. In about a week, he mad quite well by the transaction. Not obtaining any work to do we went over to Brooklyn together. To Badgers earlier than usual. I believe I saw Mary and probably Papa also as he returned from Newark.
Tuesday 6th
To the Court. I wrote several items. Late to the court as usual. Heard from Little Sue. Stayed a short time about the Herald Office and not obtaining any work went home early. I think I saw Mary and Papa. Have been intending to go to Bath but do not find time nor money to spare.
Wednesday 7th
Letters from Belle Sullivan and Miss Moorhead. The latters letter Is dated Dec. 19th. I enjoyed reading both. Do not think I had anything in Court today. In the evening sent up to see about Matilda Harris's death. Bagard and I had dinner together. To Badgers. Saw Mary and talked with her till late. Am to go to Newark tomorrow.
