March Thursday 8th 1867 Do not think there was any court news. In the evening to Newark. Bayard gave me his picture. Wrote to Belle and Miss Moorhead yesterday. To Newark on the 8.35 train is well as lean recollect. Arrived there I found besides the family Mary, Belle and Pauline Sullivan and a Mr. Creamer their cousin. Belle pleased to see me. She had received the letter and the one to Miss R. V.M care of her. She had not had time to deliver the letter. She was quite pleasant. Pauline had a cold. Their cousin a tall and rather nice looking fellow . They stayed till quite late. We had something to eat about 11. We passed the time pleasantly. George + Belle on good terms. To bed and slept soundly.
Friday 9th
Up by 1/2 an unusual hour. Had to be called a number of times and afraid of displeasing uncle by my late hours. George + I saw Mary to the can. There we found Belle with an older cousin a queer customer. Mary off + I anxious to be but Belle persuaded us to escot her to the house where she was stopping. We did go through the rain. She then wanted us to come in. I would not. Pauline appeared on the stoop and foolishness followed. George + I with an umbrella through heavy rain. [No. 505] To New York. Nothing at the court. My week's bill amounted to about $20. On night duty. Through rain + mud I travelled around to the police stations. Home late and wet + sick.
Saturday 10th
Bought a ticket for May some days ago to see the Danicheffs at the Union Sqaure theatre. She went today. Last night helped Bayard to write an account of the New York Yacht Club. Wrote several small Court [hours] for the Herald none of any account. I have not seen any large cases since I have been up there. I think Papa and Mary spent the evening with Mrs. Williams. On night duty. I believe the day was quite agreeable.
Sunday 11th
To the Court quite late as a matter of course. Became interested in one Of Bret Hartes jams in the sun and did not realize where I was till past the street where the Court house is. In the evening I went to St. Francis Xavier's church to see Father Merrick in relation to the recent [pauie] in the church. He is a small nervous man and as always befalls me the conversation gradually turned to [relipin] + I was advised to go to confession.
Monday 12th
One or two small cases in court. To Newark in the evening and on the [715] Train. Mary there also Belle + Pauline Sullivan who had not left Newark since Thursday. Mary + I to see Miss Kate [Guried], a nice looking girl with a pleasing manner. There a short time back to Aunt Jane's + there to the Sullivans' cousins where we spent some time. I did not over enjoy my self. Back to No. 505 and to bed. Slept well.
Tuesday 13th
Last night Mary Pauline + I acted disgracefully on the street laughing running + c. It was raining. Rain today also. Up early again. To see Belle + Pauline with George. I was anxious to get away early but they kept us + to my chapin determined to go to the city with us. George vowed not stay behind + I did not want to hurt anyone's feelings. Though I was worried about my leaving so late. [Pirdiry lurned] have to take the girls I hurried there off. The four of us to New York [ramping the with the nurd to]. Left there in a 4th Ave. car. George + I in 3rd Ave car. George + I changed our minds + I left him at the Sullivans. After court was through I called for him. While there I received a very nice letter from Miss R.V.M. Down to the Herald office. [Reframed] a job to the Asher House with George. Drivmer + then to 22 nd St. for Mary. To the Park theatre to see Our Boarding House, a popular play. Mary + I enjoyed ourselves. George did not. My second visit to the play. To the Sullivans house. All dark. Upstairs at Fulhim Nery + to bad. George + I in a very narrow bed.
Wednesday 14th
Geroge + I [bread of astid]. I then saw him off. Received kind letter from J.V.L. On night duty. Several items in the court line. Troubled by a crazy lawyer about a court case. A while after worried by another loonly about the Unacctanian House Missions.
