March Thursday 15th 1877 Recd. [Received] a letter from George. Yesterday, I wrote to Belle, Miss Moorhead + to J.O.L. One or two court cases. Wished to get away early as I intended visiting Belle + Pauline. But when I got down I was about to look up P.B. Sweeney. Marvelled up + around looking for "Brains." Compromised matters with my companion in the search by letting him cowrite up the affair + [chark] for it while I should simply claim a 82 detail. He gladly assented. Arrived dirty looking + far worse feeling at the Sullivans. I received such a warm reception that I forgot all about myself + thoroughly enjoyed the passing hour. Belle was very kind. Left 11/12. To Herald office + then to Brooklyn. Friday 16th Court business slow. Bayard + I took dinner at Astor House. Then in Broadway car to Eagle Theatre to see Anvill. Bayard tried to get in pee + failed. We then look in for Assunauce - no no this was another time. This night I invited him to see Our Boarding House. My third visit. His first. We enjoyed ourselves greatly. Snowing. I think we walked home although I see not to be sure on that point. Bayard's bill + my bill small. I think I got $20. I do not get much above that fojune since the change in the city editor. Saturday 17th St. Patrick's day. Rainy + muddy. Papa spent the day in Newark. Mary + I to Badger's. She stayed there all night. I passed a stupid evening quile a contrast to the pleasant there on Thursday. Then I was dirty this time I was clean + had taken pains to look better than usual. To day [Today] I paid $150 for my washing I gave it to a woman in Dean St. who supports two little neices. My washing was given before to an in quinitive not very nice woman. Home before 12 - when I say home I mean Badgers. Quite busy in the Badger house walking preparations for learning. Saw Mary + Pauline this morning. I was ugly + felt down hearted + dis spirited. Sunday 18th Late to court. Friend Brewer had little care of me however I got off all conect. Quite busy today in court. Down to the Herald office and wrote six or seven articles. Loafed around office + then to Bklyn [Brooklyn]. Ricd. [Received] a letter from dear Nellie. I believe Pauline spent the day here. Monday 19th Nothing much in court. Snow again. Bayard + I went this night to Joe Anvill not on the 16th as stated above he tried to get in free but cared not. Then to see Lenor Asunthma at the 9th Ave. theatre. Good cast enjoyed it greatly. We were up in the gallery. Home late. Tuesday 20th Saw Emma Joedleberg today + spoke to her first time in months. She was to Langan Assurance last night. She said she did not see me. I do not think she did. I remanced no I had not seemed her either. Busy today. Eight or nine cases in court and sent in the evening to attend a meeting of Californians, a Banquet at the Shirlevant House. I did not stat to nigh incrited to be are of the eaters + such a spread. Bayard + I over to Brooklyn together. Think I saw Mary Rob tonight, Wednesday 21st A dirty disapreable nasty day + night. Down to breakfast at Badgers for a great wonder. To the court. Left my umbrella and shoes at the office and in Badgers - umbrella in one place, shoes in the other. Rained of course and hard. Bayard home early. I unluckily stayed and was sent to the Muls to see about the disappearance of Darcey Hall. Proven there to over sheet through rain and mud. When I arrived at the office I was sent out again. Close. In a great perspiration. Home with riuging wet clothes at a late hour. Thursday 22nd Not much in court. Stayed in office till about 11. Nothing to do. Saw Mary at Badgers. Recd.
