Friday 28th 1877 For a long time been wishing to go to Bath but been putting it off from day to day. Resolved to go almost every day this week. Confident I would go today and told the folks so at the Badger house. When I arrived at office formed there was an important case in my court. Hastened up there and formed I had two important cases: the troubles of a pastor and a doctor. Hastened down to the office. Whole two long hours. Fitzpatrick who is second city editor blaming me for the way I wrote one. He could no do so well himself. Kept my overcoat on while writing. Tried to get through quickly. Perspiring and suffering rheumatic pains, dizziness, headache, cold! And trying to get to Bath. Resolved would not visit the country but go home that is to Badgers and go to bed. Tried to sleep; could not. Fussing about all night, trouble to keep in any one position. Removed some of my things today to Papa's office as Mrs. Badger [heaks] up housekeeping on Monday. Rced. [Received] 20.10 for last weeks work. Saturday 24th Feeling unwell. McCaffray [kissiup] case up again in court. Wrote that + another for the Herald. Down + anxious to get to Bath. Given something to do. Arranged corupt Book. Fitzpatrick + I quareled. He is a loafer. Home after 11. To bed quite sick. Could not sleep smoking to keep away the pains. Sunday 25th Yesterday was the first time in some days that I smoked. Up before daylight after trying to sleep or to even be free from pain. I never remember having suffered so in body before. God knows I do believe I have a multiplicity of troubles. Had my breakfast away from Badgers. Took away from the house the last of my things. This is my last day at Badgers. I have been there since the 22nd of December at 86 a week. During that time I have been at breakfast and two or three times have all seldom seen anybody and have had my clothes washed at a distance, myself the carter away of + Miyer back of said clothes. Bought four newspapers. Had my breakfast at 6 1/2. Tried to get in to Papa's office : too early. Tried again in half an hour succeeded. Read + [smoked]. Then to New York. To the court by 11. Wonderful. To Hearld office. Sent to Washington Place or Sqaure to a church. A minister was primp to change his faith but he postponed the entertainment. Upon my arrival back I was sent to Herald Police Headquarters + went to see Sup. Wallning also. To Badgers + asleep. Today I received the last detail for same two days. Ahead to time but denilish line soon. Monday 26th One or two small court cases. Raining hard all day. No Bath for me. Left Badgers for good. Saw Mary before departure. To Newark. To day [Today] I had my over shoes + carrieu an umbrella for a wonder. Glad to see me at Newark. Passed a quietly pleasant evening. To bed late. All of the children have mumps. Tuesday 27th Wrote six or seven things for Hearld from court probably less than six. Left Newark about 11. Carried my umbrella to town + wore my over shoes. Had use for both. Another rainy day. Mud + rain; rain + mud. Glad to go to Newark, as too far to Bath + no other place to go to. OuT with Hewey a reporter on the Hearld to Newark. He is a great talker. He chimed in amount by the whole way. Arrived in time for supper. The children over the mumps + little Daisy sick. High wind. Played cards with Gada. Talked with Aunt Sue, George and Uncle William. Not over nice shirt on. To bed. Wednesday 28th Some days ago wore a shirt with a collar for first time. To New York on a late car after 12 I believe. To court. Big case. Did not leave court till six usually get away by 4 or 4 1/4 if I frequent not the laqer beer salon which I must frequently do I am sorry to say not that I am anxious to drink or to drink much. To Hearld office. Wrote out my big story also some short ones. Away from office + to Newark. Wore my over shoes +carvies umbrella. Another wet day; signs of cleaning. Left New York on 10 15 train. To Newark. Found house locked. All dark. Rain four times : leup waits between each. New uncles head out of window. Who's there. New causle unlocked doors + poor uncle in robe to wait. Apologies + to bed ashamed of myself.
