March Thursday 29th 1877 Uncle would receive no excuse for my late call. Business is business so he said, and he did not blame me. He wished me to have a night key so I could come in tonight + other nights without disturbing anyone but I said I should not be back to Newark tonight. To Hearld office made out my bill. My story appears today. All in Newark read it. Indye Bixly at the 57th street court told me it had gaines $10 for the woman I sided with against her husband. To Court. Wrote only one or two items - rest after yesterdays work - calm after every show. Bayard + others congratulated me on my story. By the way Bayard and I have for no reason whatever except his foolishness been actively queerly two and such other. Today he condescended to speak to me + we talked again. I spent this is night with my dirty looking shirt at the Clintin House Brooklyn - paid one dollar. Saw May at Newark. She was unwell. Friday 30th Saw Papa at the office, first time sine Monday. He is at Bath again Johnie Homet is cook. Read letter from Magie. Has been lying in Bath P.O. for some time. Magie as usual friendly good + kind. Up in the Clinton House about 9. Breakfast in restaurant. Rather nice room last night but poor hotel. Bayard + I to Bath. The latters first visit in sometime. By way of Mi Hauchlon Ronything it. Rude hiring. Saturday 31st Bayard + I slept well. Cold in house last night but plenty of bed clothes. Papa to Newark. I was to have gone but as so many of us are at Uncle Williams already I changed my mind. My bill for last week was 817.70. I am getting down. To the court. To Bath in the evening. I think I came without Bayard. Yesterday or to day. I brought down a number of papers + one or two things for John. Talked to John and then to bed. This morning Bayard + I played ball. Todays Rural Gazette contains some of my articles. To Fort Hamilton this morning + to Brooklyn that way - or no Johnnie drove us to the city with calus and a wagon. April Sunday 1st April Up quite early as would have been the case weeks ago but late as I now rise earlier. To the court late. An important case on which I only partially got as the court was closed when I arrived. To 90th St. to see court cleark. Wrote Manifred for a Mr. Word. To Herald office. To Bath on the 710 dummy. I think. Papa still in Newark. Bought Sunday papers. I think Bayard did come down with me yesterday. He was to have come tonight also but we mistook instructions + we missed each other. April Monday 2nd Saw Papa Mary Rob + Aunt Mary at the office. That is tomorrow's view. Dont [Don't] think I saw Papa till night. To # court where arrved about 4 1/2 or later. Missed an item + was overhauled for not uniting up sufficiently another. Dirty rainy muddy night. To Fort Hamilton Bayard + I. John waiting for us with carriage. Cold. Got together a meal. Tuesday 3rd Papa to city early. We followed in a later train. Recd. letters from Belle + Miss. R.V.M. Both writing me to call upon them. Resolved to visit the latter at the Starlevant tomorrow. Pleasant anticipating. Saw Bayard after down from court where there was little going on. Asked me to come to his house. Declined + slept at the Clinton House. Wednesday 4th Up after 9. Breakfast at Enjenam's in Washington St. Saucy uniter. Saw Papa + Mary I think: also Miss Zoethberg about this time. Mary dissvaded me from calling an Miss Moorhead. I felt miserable rest of day. Wrote to Miss M. letting her the truth i.e. I had no clothes. Tore the letter up + resolved to plead sickness. Feeling wretched rest of day + at night no better. Spent evening at Bayards house. Slept in a narrow bed. Very uncomfortable. Wish I could have R.V.M.
