[Centered] Friday Monday, 23. 13th
[Right] 18677
To New York after dinn breakfasting in a dirty shirt + feeling ashamed all day. Recd. money only $10.70. Very little in the Court. Wrote to [J.U.L.?] at this time. Left some money for beer + c in Schwab's then to office. Hurried to BKlyn. Saw my washwoman. She had not my washing done. To the Park theatre + saw "Brass." Enjoyed it. Met one of Flanagan's clerks [army today?] also [Heudaunasche?]. To bed by 11 1/2.
[Centered] Saturday, 14th
Up after 9 1/2. To Papa's office. Saw Mary + Papa there. He in great strait for Mary to pay trial costs. No this was yesterday. To Court. Nothing much. Spending more money in saloon. Hurried home to spend evening with Mary. She was away somewhere. Waited for her till after nine. Then up stairs. Found my washing. Went to bed early as I had nothing to do. Had none but one meal today. Bought Rural baguette. Haught it would have an [athlete?] from me in it but it had not.
[Centered] Sunday, 15th
Awake by daylight. Up by six. Breakfasted in Eugenman's. Arrived at Court by 9.20 the first morning I have been there. Only one small case. To Herald office then to Bayard's House. Himself not saw his brother Philip also Mrs. [Brasher?]. To Papa's office + with invariable hurdle to Bath by way Ft. Hamilton. Very pleasant day. To Fummell's with [Homet?]. Played billiards. Open cars on [dummy?]. A good number of people down. Party to look at our houses. Mrs. [Badger?] + a party called.
[Centered] Monday Tuesday 24. 16th
Up after 8. High tide on. Papa left on 11.17 + I on 12.57 [dummy?]. From Bath to 57th St. Nothing of much account. In the evening saw Papa in his office. He gave me back the money Mary + I had loaned him. He goes to Newark to [speed?] the night. I went onward to academy to see the crowd going to see [Shangham?]. To Mrs. Harris' the boarding house. Spent the evening with Mary. She stayed Saturday + Sunday with Sullivan.
[Centered] Tuesday 17th
Mary + I to breakfast. The meals are quite nice. The people endeavor to make us as comfortable as possible. Saw Bayard about this time. Wrote a letter to Marie yesterday or today. In the evening went to see [Shangham?]. [Young Joey?] in it. Nothing like the New York representation [triumph?] quite good. Took dinner with Mrs. Kelly. First time to their house since Mrs. Flaherty's death. Saw Mary [Bevim?] + others. Had hearty meal. Kind treatment.
[Centered] Wednesday 18th
Twenty six cents to last his days. To Papa’s office. Did not see him. Raining hard all day. Umbrella at Bath. Borrowed one. It came in good. To Court. Very little to do. Handed in what I had. Wrote to Belle Sullivan. To Papa’s office again. Stayed a-round to front of academy. In spite of rain a large crowd going in. To boarding home Saw Mary. Talked with her quite a while on different subjects. Paid my board.
[Centered] Thursday 19th
Mary to Newark before I was up. She was to have left me 50c as I have not a cent. Too late for breakfast. To Herald. Borrowed 15c from [7am?] Preston. Wednesday, 25 With it bought some dried up cakes. Only thing till 6. Borrowed $100 from Nesbit a lawyer. Very little in Court. Stayed a short time about office. Rainy day. No umbrella of course. My clothes wet. Hurried to boarding house. Mary not home for night. To bed about 8. Read till 10. Feeling quite lonesome.
[Centered] Friday 20th
Another rainy day. Terribly disagreeable. To Court after visiting Papa in office. [Woote?] did not mail any letter to Aunt Jim. In Evening to Newark. All pleased to see me. Met [Jada?] in sheet. He did not know me at first. Uncle away to club. George + I [chimmed?] about everything. To bed about 11. All the children well. Billy looking excellent. Was paid today. My bill was $10.20 of late the old time. Bayard wanted me to call upon him tonight.
[Centered] Saturday 21st
Up in good season. Breakfast + lunch + then left. George saw me to cars. Forgot my umbrella. To Court. There too early. Loafed around some time. Met Marcus. He is looking aged + shabby. No items except drunks. To Herald. Stayed there till 9. Brooklyn streets crowded. Saw John Roberts + [clan?] McNeely both acting as sheet loafers. Saw Mary at No. 260. Had a chat with her. To bed around 12.
[Centered] Sunday 22nd
Breakfasted at 8 1/2. Then to New York after buying number of papers. Met Bayard in ferry boat. He had little to say. Arrived at Court for second time in good morning season. My work done in Kelly’s. Saw herself Mrs. [Hoet?] nee [Beries?] + Sam. With last named to Bath via Frt. Hamilton. I cooked dinner. Sam back to city. Pleasant day. Spent the day quietly. Papa in poor spirits.
