August 1877 Thursday 30th Will Griswold and I up bright + early + off. Fishing + poor luck. We enjoyed ourselves however. Found the day very warm. We fished off Ft. Lafayette + off Staten Island. Only a few weak fish caught. I went bathing about 12. Then to New York. Attended to Brewer's copy. Warm day. I think I have won that bet with Brewer. Will was to have gone back to Newark today. But he was here when I came back. Bill $10.70.

Friday 31st. The Griswolds left today. Will O'Gorman away early in the morning. Said goodbye to G's. He invited me to call upon them. Met Mrs. Kelly red faced + Jim Kelly looking better in the lane. Away late. Drew salary for two weeks, $21.40. Nothing much at Court. Home. Found people here. We spent a quiet evening. Many in the city. Wrote 18 Mazie twice about this time.

Saturday 1st Bid goodbye to the O'Gorman family. George + I to Fiornall's. We played five games of billiards. To the city on a late dummy. Back to bath to find everything looking lonely. We have had such crowds up to now that when they have all gone everything looks deserted. Determined to stop smoking for a time or at least smoke less than I have been during. Must also stop imbibing not that I like much but I fnid [find] no sense in doing it.

Sunday 2nd Ellen called me several times. Paid no attention till I learned it was late. Then off without breakfast: in time for dummy. Cheap + nice little breakfast in Bklyn [Brooklyn]. Two small cases at court: Wrote a funny one coming down on cars. I find it a good way to Employ my time to write. Dinner in city: Mrs. Helfensteins Mazie + Brasher here. Mazie stayed all night: We chatted sometimes.

Monday 3rd Chilly. Mazie back to New York. She + I chatted quite a while. She wanted me to accompany her to the city: Left Bath late. Towards Brown and Wood at Court. One case up. Wrote it up + another that occurred on Sunday as I came down in the cars. Saw the Herald Fitzpatrick: just returned from vacation. Playing billiards at Furmell's: Felt poorly.

Tuesday 4th Weathers more agreeable. Up late. Left Bath on 2.21 dummy. Arrived in 57th St. at [4 1/2]. Was told by Brewer he had sent my copy, down. Loafed in Schwab's till after 6. Clam stew in Bklyn [Brooklyn] for supper. To Bath in 8 4 5 dummy. Did not go to office. Sent by many letter to Mazie. Wrote a strip of nonsense to Griswold about the average temperatures of July and August. Played billiards Furnell's. Won. Took pity on mine Enemy a farmer + paid half expenses. Feeling poorly most of day. Drinking too much beer.

Wednesday 5th Yesterday walked on beach. Found a 3 cent silver piece. Passed the morning just so. Arrival of Count Brasher. Horribly dejicted [dejected] in his ways: heartily sick he said. Told him May expected him in city. He braced up + accompanied me. We spent some hours in rushing here + there. We went in pairs lose crushed tragdian [tragedian] at N.Y. Park theatre by Sothern [Southern]. [blank] it immense. Slept downtown late.

Sour as [blank] as ever. Daisy with her mother. Perfectly centented [contented]. To Court within morning and afternoon. Mazie + Mary expectid [expected] - not seen. Played billiards till late. Papa a spectator.

Friday 7th Have an impression that yesterday and today it rained. Visited by Brasher who stayed all night: He and I played a game of cards. Maize + Mary were to have been down yesterday or today. Rain no doubt prevented their so doing. Think today were to have played base ball but preventid [prevented] by rain. I believe we [blank] an inning or two. After carrying a long letter I had written [blank] sometime in my pocket I mailed it to Griswold. Bill drawn [blank].
