September 1877

Monday 17th At Court about 4 1/2 [4:30]. Cause of late arrival my loafing irresolute way. Luckily no items. Hennessy + wood present Brewer not. Stayed very shortly then straight for Bath. Stopped on way for coffee + pie. 5 cents short. Promised to settle tomorrow. Rather chilly. Out on bank for short time. Papa to city + back. Mary + Mazie to Newark. Not returned at night. A pleasant day. Saw + avoided speaking to Owen Marrin in the afternoon on dummy + horsecart. Ellen O'Rourke increasing in kindness. Have not written in diary for almost two weeks. Set aside this evening for the task. Forgotten most of occurrences. On Saturday I slept at International Hotel, Park Row. Smoked on Saturday good deal. Same on Sunday. Have determined not to smoke again till birthday. On Wednesday the 12th while I was playing ball I commenced smoking first time since Saturday 1st. Smoked again on Thursday. Mrs. Helfenstein and Mrs. O'Brien down on Wednesday back on Thursday. Boyard also called + left suddenly. Thursday or Friday now with Miss Robinson. Season drawing to a close. Shaws back to Bath after few days absence. I travelled to city with Lillie Reckinagel not long ago. She has grown tall and looks well at a little distance. Closer inspection not near so nice. Do not feel very well. Dising [dissing] myself. Sounds as if it were raining.

Tuesday 18th Mary + Mazie not yet back [a̶w̶a̶y̶]. Made up mind to do something; did nothing. Left Bath late. At Court late. Wood + Hennessy of Times present. Only are game; which did not see print. Supper with Brasher at Astor House. He with me to Greenwood where was a parting. Arrived at Bath. Chinning to Ellen; then to bed. Papa away also Mary + Mazie. During [e̶a̶r̶l̶y̶] night Johnnie + Ellen heard + saw burglars.

Wednesday 15th Passed the morning reading + talking to Ellen. In the afternoon to Prospect Park. Met Rogers of our mine a fresh Gravesend policeman. Although told we were to play found no one of our mine there. Passed a stupid time: to the Herald. Letter from Brewer in during court news. To Bath late. Mary + Mazie back. [blank] my self not in good terms have been for some time will not be some time. Played billiards: Quite fortunate. Homet was in the game. [blank]

Thursday 20th Opening to talking + loafing too much away late. Handed in $14.70. At Court when it was over. Luckily nothing there. With Brewer to decide on [blank] about mean. Temperature of Aug. [August] + July at meteorological human [blank]. Important but I the winner. Saw animals in park. On Elevated Railroad. Spent day with.

Friday 21st [blank][blank] for short time last avg [average]. Drew my $14.70. Yesterday [blank] first time on Elevated R.R. [Railroad]. It seems to go about yet notwithstanding they make good time saving half an hour. When they take me from 54th St. to the ferry or vice versa. My ride easily and I like them exceedingly. Had my ride open to view everything. Receiving numerous unintelligible [blank] Frank O'Hanlen. Today if I remember rightly there was nothing or very little at Court. I arrived up there quite late as annual. Mazie + I chinning.

Saturday 22nd Mary acted disgracefully on Monday night. She is a girl with little of decency in her I've very to any. She said harsh things to Mazie + about me. [blank] she has [blank] unkind things about me in [blank] + elsewhere. Homet left us yesterday; with time. Ellen +Willie were to have gone to Wallack; Mary interposed. I + Daisy O'Hanlon went: saw Robinson Crusoe. [blank] to Bath. Might work discontinued. Frank [blank].

Sunday 23rd Frank + I to Court: We went + came by Elevated Railroad + [blank][blank]. Nothing at Court: Mr. + Mrs. Helfenstein stayed all night. [blank] had gone home. I hid his hat. He stayed all night: He refuses to return my cards. Papa telling jokes. Helfenstein [blank] his wife [blank] watermelon although myself + Frank to [blank]. Nicest cutting up. Papa Mary + Brasher in a short time.
