Life is the activity by which eus moves itself or changes and perfects itself all things which have motion are said to live and vice versa. Thus plants animals the mind lives. There are some bodies that seem to live by metaphor they are said to live. Hence the principle and end of of vital vital actions are in a living eus. All vital actions are immanent and vice versa. Life is threefold: vegetative sensitive and intellectual. Vegetative is divided into three functions trition augmentation and generation and is common to plant-brute and man, sensitive into relation which is subdivided into faculty of knowledge and desire and contractility, and is common to brute & man, Intellectual into acts of intellect and will and is common to man alone. The principle of life is that by which the living thing lives or that by reason of which it possesses force suitable to the Exercise of vital functions. In plants this is a wonderful organization by which plants have mity, and receive and exercise the process of brites to the Exercise of vital operations. In brides and men the principle of life is the soul. II. Is the soul simple and spiritual ? The materialists oppose us.. They say: the soul is the body itself or a part of it or a quality or tême- perament some more subtle and purer material: the operations of the soul is motioner attempt at motion. We refute their by proving the sove neither is a body nordepends on a body: that the soul is a simple and spiritual substance. The soul is simple as to its essence it is not made up of mary Essential parts as to its quantity it has neither integrant actual nor possible parts it is unextended although it lives in Extended body, A spiriting substance is a simple substance which in at least some of it's operations is free from concourse withe material organs: it needs not a body it is and acts without one. Hence we say the soul is a simple and spiritual substance.
