September Monday 17th 1877

Monday 17th
At Court about 4[1/2]. Cause of late arrival my [blank] irresolute way. Luckily no items. [blank] [&] wood present Brewer not. Stayed very [blank] then straight for Bath. Stopped on way for coffee [&] pie. 5 cents short. Promised to settle tomorrow. Rather chilly. Out in [blank] for short time. Papa to city [&] truck. Mary [&] Mazie to Newark. Not [blank] at night. A pleasant day. Saw [&] avoided speaking to [blank][blank] in the afternoon on dummy [&] [blank]. Ellen O'Rourke increasing in kindness. Have not written in diary for almost two weeks. Set aside this even [blank] for the task. [blank] after must of occurrences. On Saturday I slept at [blank] Hotel, Park Row. Smoked on Saturday good deal. [blank] on Sunday. Have determined not to smoke again till birthday. On Wednesday the 12th while I was playing ball I [blank][blank] first time since Saturday 1st. Smoked again on Thursday. Mrs. Helfenstein and Mr. O'Brien down on Wednesday back on Thursday. Boyand also called [&] left [blank]. Thursday or Friday now with Miss Robinson. Season drawing to a close. Shown back to Bath after few days absence. I travelled to City with Lillie [blank] not long ago. She has grown tall and looks well at a little distance. Closer [blank] not wear no [blank]. Do not feed very well. Doing [blank]. Sounds as if it were raining.

Supper with Brasher at Astor Howel. he with me to [blank] where was a painting. Arrived at Bath. Chinning to Ellen; then looked. Papa away also Mary [&] Mazie. [blank] might Johnnie [&] Ellen heard [&] saw [blank]?

Passed the morning reading [&] talking to Ellen. In the afternoon  to protect Park. Met Rogers of [blank] mine a fresh [blank] policeman. Although told we were to play found no one of our wine there. Passed a stupid time: to the Herald. Letter from Brewer in dining court news. To Bath late. Mary [&] Mazie back. [blank] my self not in good [blank] have been for some time will [blank] same time. Played billiards: [blank] fortunate. Hometown in the game. [blank]
