February Monday 12th Left my clothes with Kate at Bath to wash yesterday. Before I got out of bed I heard voices in the hallway and then came a rap at the door and I recognized the the voice of Pauline Sullivan. She and Belle had come over to see Mary and the latter was in Newark. I dressed and chatted with my lady friends till after 12. They persuaded me to accompany them to Papa’s office which I did though looking shabby terribly shabby. There they left me. I talked with Papa gave him ten dollars and then with my bank book visited the Dime Savings bank. The clerk there would not give me anything until I brought Papa with me. Back to Papa’s office and with him to the bank where I received $13.59. Bought a pair of pants and a pair of shoes both most damnably needed and gave up my holy shoes and threadbare trousers. Dined with Papa. To the Herald office. Nothing doing there. To Badgers. Found a crowd of people there among them Miss Velser Lottie Pencior + Messrs. Deau Perkius + Ecker. Waited till late and then accompanied Belle Sullivan then home in 18th St. Back to Badgers. A very windy night. Saw Mrs. Sullivan. Tuesday 13th To the Herald office but no work doing. Bayard and I on very small wages this week. On Sunday wrote to Mary Harrison. Yesterday saw Mary + Papa first time in some days. Pauline Sullivan speaking to me this morning she spent the night with Mary. Having so very little to do I went in the evening to the Park Theatre and saw Our Boarding House. I enjoyed it very much indeed. Back to the Herald office and to Brooklyn with Bayard. Wednesday 14th Nothing to do today. Mr. Meighan, city editor offered me the position of reporter at the 57th St. police court salary $10 a week and I accepted the proposition. I go to work tomorrow. Up to the court today. Saw how they did things and became alarmed at the idea of how I would not do things. Back to the office saw Brasher found him in a bad humor and to relieve the lowness of our spirits we went to the San Francisco Minstrels. To Brooklyn together. Today is Valentine day also Ash Wednesday. Must have eaten some four or five meals today a good way to commence Lent. Thursday 15th Handed in my bill which amounts to $5 the lowest I have yet presented. New experiences. To the 57th St. court arrived there about 11. Made myself known to different people: policemen and such. I succeed a John O’Connor who has been removed for allowing himself to be beaten. I loafed around for some time as court had adjourned and did not reassemble till 2. From 2 till 4 sitting in court. Nothing of importance occurred. Made the acquaintance of the World and Associated Press reporters. We three and a Nathan Nesbit a criminal lawyer whom I had seen in Planagaris office to a beer saloon where we stayed till after six: much against my wish as I did not enjoy the beer drinking nor the conversation. To the Herald office and thence to Newark. To Uncle William’s first time in over six or eight months. Received a warm welcome. Uncle Aunt George and Dada all glad to see me. Mary Rob there. Long conversation with George and with Uncle. Passed a quiet but pleasant time. Kind words and interest displayed. Geo. is improving.
