August, Thursday, 30th 1877.

Will Griswald and I up bright [&] early [&] off. Fishing [&] poor luck. We enjoyed ourselves however. Found the day very warm. We fished off [blank]: Lafayette [&] off Statin Island. Only a few weak fish caught. I went [blank] about-12. Then to New York. Attended to Brewer's [blank]. Warm day. I think I have won that bet with Brewer. Will was to have gone back to Newark today. But he was here when I came back. Bill $10.70.

Friday 31st.

[blank][blank][blank] left day. Will [blank] away early in the morning. Said food by 15 P's. He invited me to call upon them. Met her, Kelly [blank][blank] [&] Jim/Ally [blank] better in the lane. Away [blank]. Drew [blank] for live weeks, $21.40. Nothing much at [blank] Home. Found people here. [blank] a quiet evening. Mary in the city. Wrote 18 Magie twice about this time.

Saturday 1st Bid food by to the [blank] family. George [&] I to [blank]. We played five games of billiards. To the city on a late [blank]. Back to bath to find everything looking lonely. We have had such crowds up to now that when they have all gone everything looks [blank]. Determined to stop smoking for a time or at least smoke less than I have been during. Must also stop [blank] not that I like much but I [blank] no [blank] in doing it.

Sunday 2nd Ellen called me several times. Paid no attention till I learned it was late. Then off without breakfast: in time for [blank]. [blank] nice little breakfast in [blank]. Two [blank] cases at [blank]: Wrote a [blank] one coming down in cars. I find it a good way to [blank] my time to write. Driver in [blank]: [blank][blank] Marie [&] [blank] here. Marie stayed all night: We chatted sometimes.

Monday 3rd [blank]. [blank] back to New York. She [&] I chatted quite a while. She wanted me to accompany her to the city: Left [blank] late. Towards [blank] and [blank] at [blank]. One case up. Wrote it up [&] another that occurred on Sunday as I came down in the cars. saw the [blank] to; patrick: just relieved from vacation. Playing billiards at [blank]: Feet [blank]

Tuesday 4th Weathers more agreeable. Up late. Left [blank] on 2.21 [blank]. Arrived in 57th St. at [4 1/2]. Was told by Brewer he had send my cups, down. [blank] in Schwab's till after 6. [blank] [blank] in [blank] for supper. To [blank]
