July Wednesday 11th 1877
Yesterday first line so expensive in way of dinner in many days. [?] about 10. Then Papa's office. Bought papers to Court. Wrote of [?] cases for Bureau, same amount for myself; also another [?] about Beye! To Herald office. Nothing there for one. Wrote another funny story as funny as it [?] away. Off to Bath after 10 supper, second meal today. I only have 2 meals a day night along with very few exceptions. Found Papa in very low spirits. I am [?] has been [???]. Had some thing to eat at Bath. Finished my cigarettes. I smoke too much.
Thursday 12th
Had breakfast before 8 today, an unusual thing for me on weekdays. Something that very seldom happens. Miss Batterson mailed Mary. I saw her in the [?] in my base ball pants. My first bath of the season. The water is delightful. Enjoyed it very much. To Brooklyn on dummy. To office made out my bill for $11.70. To the Court. Wood was there. By the way my [?] and close friend Hervey to Police Headquarters. [?] lift for brim. Only one overall case. Wrote another funny story. It was [?] into the waste basket. In the [?] a detail about a $300 robbery. Only decent job in some days. Stayed at office quite a while and fell after more food. Onward to [?] station. At office + [?] till 4 1/2 to bed 5 1/4
Friday 13th
Breakfast at 12. To Papa's office. Served paper on a lawyer in need [?] for Papa. in the suit Johnnie Hornet has brought [?] aimed the,. To Herald office. Press bill of $11.70. An extraordinary thing this day Harvey spent 10 cents in [?] To Court. Bought package off cigarettes' before going. Nothing much there. Wrote Bureaus cups. [???] the $1 which I owed them: also [?] the 25 cents I owed him. Another funny story I do not yet [?] to [??????] to Bath tomorrow. Bayard has been to Newark [?] US [?] He also appears of [??] Great cheering given 13. 13 [???] of clothes. down Bath on Wednesday. Brought pair of old shoes [???] some number of old clothes and [??] now received. [??] 17 cents for them. To Bath in the 8 1/2 dummy. [??] hand while [??] out of dummy to [???]
Saturday 14th
To the city on a late train after a royal bath in the sea. My second bath arrived at and got news from Court. Attended to Brewers [?] To Herald office. Wrote up [?] and to Bath on 8 dummy I think. Found the boys at our house. And in the evening on the water with them in Brian's boat which he has [?] for two weeks. First snow of season. [?] boat pulsion in mind of the animal of O'Brien his wife children and [?]. They occupy Mamma's old room and Papa's room: Papa sleeping [?] stains. Passed a very quiet evening. To bed after [?] a little while as the [?] ajd walking around.
Sunday 15th
Up about 7 1/2. Hurried to dummy station which as I waved, so did the dummy. By morning I caught it. On to New York. When at Court found Sue [?] there. [?] man came in afterwards. Two or three cases not important. On [?] handed in six small cases. Had my dinner about 12 1/2. Came out to Bath on 2 [?] I think. Found them all at dinner, among others. J. B. Brandon enquire J. B. B. [?] Uncle Will + myself played ball afterwards. Brandon left 5. Said he felt unwell. Marie + Seraphina here. Willie [?] visited Williams in evening. 1st Weaning off new coat + vest! Saw Beu de Bauand [??] Will [?] was kind. Spent pleasant + quiet evening there.
